PBR TECHNOLOGY S.r.l. has been awarded a patent for a special pipe cutter "large pipe cutter" ®, a machine with hydraulic drive that can cold cut pipes in metal, plastic or concrete, with diameters from medium to large (over 50 cm or 20”),without needing a jig (or other supporting device) inside the pipe itself, thanks to multiple punches that work simultaneously without removal of material.
The pipe cutting machine cold cuts the pipes under control of the operator on whose excavator it has been applied, after placing it astride on the pipe at the point of cutting.
The LPC® machine can be used for the removal of pipes of any type and diameter, after adjusting it according to the diameters and the materials of the pipes to be removed. In the field of pipelines this requirement for removal of the existing pipes, that are placed out of service and drained, is due to ageing or inadequate sizes of the pipes which are therefore removed and replaced with new ones.
The disposal of the existing pipe takes place through the total decommissioning and removal of the sections that make it up and of the secondary lines branching off from them. The purpose of this machine is to provide an innovative type of apparatus that allows both to cut and, subsequently, to lift the pipe from the bottom of the excavation where it is placed, without requiring operators inside the excavation and/or on the ground.
The machine can be applied on an excavator and controlled by a single operator who operates the actuators and controls it. Therefore no cutting team is required inside the excavation nor special temporary installation for the safety of the excavation and the size of the excavation can consequently be smaller.
This is an innovative type of equipment that effectively replaces the traditional oxy-hydrogen torch and eradicates any risk of fire or explosion: the eradication concerns - on one hand - all risks associated with the presence of flammable residues of gas or fuel previously transported by the pipe (and we here remind that the high flammability of gases or liquids in the pipeline - though previously drained - has often been the cause of accidents with serious consequences) and - on the other hand - the risks related to the operations of removal of the polyethylene coating which is generally positioned all around the pipeline as anticorrosive protection. This type of protection is in fact made of combustible material and is therefore clear that its prior removal is essential as a matter of safety against the risk of fire and explosion before torch cutting. With the use of the LPC ®, the removal of the corrosion protection is no longer necessary on account of the cold cutting technique, with considerable saving in operating times and costs, as well as with the fundamental guarantee of safety, and protection of the environment (the removal of the coating also involves a problem of waste management).
With the use of LPC ®, the risks due to explosive atmospheres and fire are practically zeroed and firefighting teams need no longer to be permanently in attendance during all the phases of the operation.
